Plant Sales (UK ONLY)

We will continue to have a few plants for sales again in 2020 for interested customers. The list below represents the plants we plan to have available but we are not accepting orders until about March time.

This spectacular Caladium has a tall upright habit with striking paper white, green veined leaves on strong stems - some sun tolerance but best in semi shade to avoid burning. Caladiums need warm humid conditions to do well so if you can simulate a Florida climate they respond spectacularly. Rhizomes die back in winter but can be kept semi dry in warmth. I grow mine on a warm polytunel then bring then in as a house plant for a few weeks.

Ensete montbeliardii 1 litre plants

A recent re-introduction into the UK by the late David Constantine this Ensete montbeliardii was originally documented in 1930 but fell out of cultivation. An upright, elegant Ensete with thicker leaves that are a bit greener without the same wonderful deep red colouring as maurelii on the front but a stunning purple reverse. A very tall plant once it gets going with a red midrib to the very long thin leaves, the attractive red strip also continues down the stems. This is a rare collectors item and a must have for any exotic planting. Second year plants after over wintering in a warm frost free greenhouse and given good conditions will reach 10ft to 14ft.

Fatsia 'Spiders Web'

JP3965
!

Variegated Japanese Aralia 3 litre plants җ җ

A lovely new form of Fatsia mainly grown for its large variegated foliage although clusters of white flowers are also produced in summer. The large 30cm icing dusted foliage is particularly attractive making a wonderful specimen plant for the exotic garden, eventually reaching 2m tall. Prefers some light dappled shade so useful for a dark corner and said to be hardy to -15C but I think some foliage damage would be inevitable at low temperatures without protection.

Hibiscus sinensis or Chinese Hibiscus 1 litre plants l

I have a few tropical Hibiscus sinensis plants I have been propagating that are surplus to my needs. This one is a very prolific flowering variety, and a fast growing plant quickly making a small shrub to 5ft ot 6ft. The numerous large flowers are fully double and bright "barby doll" pink. These are not the house plant stunted plants you can purchase so really only suitable for a warm glasshouse during winter and a warm sunny sheltered patio in summer.

Murraya koenigii

JP2278
!
Murraya koenigii - the Curry Leaf Plant 1 litre plants

We have a few Murraya koenigii plants grown from seed each year of the Curry-leaf tree. A native of India and Sri Lanka, it is a small tree suitable for pot culture with very pungent aromatic leaves. The leaves are used in curries. Flowers late spring to early summer with small white flowers, 5/16 of an inch across and are sweetly scented.

Murraya koenigii need warm temperatures with full sun to partial shade and a well draining loam based compost mix. The compost should be allowed to thoroughly dry between waterings. Fertilize weekly during the growing season and do not let the winter temperature fall below 18c° when watering should be very light. A small tree perhaps making 4ft in 5 years.

Musa sikkimensis

!

Musa sikkimensis hardy Himalayan Banana 1 litre plants  җ җ

Musa sikkimensis originates from 6,000ft in the Himalayas, and is significantly larger than Basjoo. Already it is proving to be more suitable than Basjoo in our tricky summer climate, more resilient to winds and continues to grow in cool weather when Basjoo almost stops. Trials over the last few years prove that it over winters outdoors successful given the same treatment. Extremely attractive with some plants displaying young leaves either mottled maroon or with a maroon reverse.

Strong Red Clone - limited quantity

Musa sikkimensis hardy Himalayan Banana 3 litre plants  җ җ

We have been growing Sikkimensis from seed for a number of years and we have kept some of the best foliage colour plants for our own garden. We have a few plants propagated from suckers from these that might be of interest for anyone looking for strong red markings. Depending on the leaf on these young plants they can be tinted anywhere between 25% to 50% red but be aware the colour marking declines as the plant gets larger.

Plumbago capensis

JP264
!
Plumbago Capensis Darker Blue Clone 1 litre pots
Plumbago capensis is a shrubby plant that throws long runners almost like a non clinging climber. If pruned it can be kept to shape and is often used as hedging in the Tropics. This year I have located an improved new clone of this plant with darker blue flowers,  more shrubby in form, making a compact bush. It is also proving very floriferous and will be the only variety offered by us from now on. The one in the picture above and behind is the darker clone.

Russelia equisetiformis

JP1064
!
Russelia equisetiformis or Coral Blow 1 litre plants
Russelia equisetiformis the Coral plant is a multi-branched sub shrub with slender rush like stems. The wiry branches start out erect then fall over cascading down in lengths as long as 4 ft (1.2 m). Flowers from spring until autumn outdoors in warm climates and all year long indoors. The flowers are produced in hanging clusters of scarlet tubular flowers about 1 in (2.5 cm) long that look like little firecrackers, inspiring the plant’s common name. Slow growing at first it will eventually fill quite a large pot given warm conditions. In the tropics it attracts humming birds for the flower nectar.

Solandra maxima

JP1546
!

Solandra maxima or Chalice Vine 1 litre plants

A few years ago we acquired this modern hybrid of Solandra maxima that flowers readily on smaller plants. However it is a fast growing very large tropical climber, only really suitable for large conservatories to be seen at its best. The viine bears massive yellow flowers the size of dinner plates and an excellent specimen can be seen at Wisley in their tropical House. The large yellow cup shaped flower gives the plant its common name.

Strobilanthes dyerianus

!

In propagation shipping August

Strobilanthes dyerianus or Persian Shield 1 litre plants

Strobilanthes dyerianus commonly called Persian Shield is among the most sought after foliage plants worldwide. It produces quite unique shimmering iridescent purple coloured metallic looking leaves. Used as a house plant in the UK it is a shade lover but with dappled sunlight the colouring is much stronger. However strong sun burns the leaves. Always late in the season to propagate so please be patient.
