Leafy Choices for your Summer Salads or as a Cooked Vegetable

Abelmoschus manihot

Hibiscus Manihot - 10 seeds
Abelmoschus is a spectacular annual shrub like plant best treated as an annual in the UK. Huge 6” hibiscus like yellow blooms with a maroon central blotch. They do need heat to get going but a 6ft Abelmoschus plant with side shoots covered in these gorgeous blooms is achievable in a single season from seed. Very fast growing in heat, the large, attractive leaves can be used in salads, stir-fries, soups or other dishes.  A single leaf can cover a slice of bread in a sandwich and is used like lettuce.  The leaves are tender when raw but turn slimy if overcooked.  They are very high in nutrition.

Amaranth - Edible

Chinese Spinach  Aprx 500 seeds 
Edible Amaranth are a fast growing vegetable that can be harvested 30 days after sowing in warm conditions, by the cut-and-grow-again method. Seeds are very small and will germinate best at temperature above 20°C under dark conditions. Thin the growing plants if necessary and thinnings can be eaten. Edible young leaves and stems are cooked like spinach. Soft texture and tender leaves are excellent for stir-frys and soups.

Amaranth Chinese Giant Orange

Amaranth Chinese Giant Orange is an 6ft to 8ft Amaranth with large heads of golden orange. The young leaves are green with orange ribs and deliciously edible as baby salad leaves. The seeds are lightly coloured also edible and excellent ground into a flour or cooked like oatmeal.  The plant prefers full sun and normal garden soil.  Sow the seed directly in the spring garden and thin to about 1 foot apart or grow in small pots before planting out after frosts have finished.  Part of our "Triffid" pack

Amaranth Lotus Purple

Amaranth Lotus Purple is a striking 8ft tall robust heavy yielder with thick red-purple flower heads full of purple-black seeds. The young leaves are deliciously edible as baby salad leaves or cooked as spinach. The seeds are edible very nutritious and excellent ground into a flour or cooked like oatmeal.  The plant prefers full sun and normal garden soil.  Sow the seed directly in the spring garden and thin to about 1 foot apart or grow in small pots before planting out after frosts have finished.  Part of our "Triffid" pack

Amaranthus dubius

Callaloo aprox Aprx 50 seeds
Most leafy Amaranthus varieties are edible but as far as I can determine this one is the true "Callaloo" An erect herb up to 1.5m tall with a branched stem and oblong dark-green leaves. Its mainly used as a leafy vegetable like spinach and is the "Callaloo" used widely in the Caribbean. This annual herb may be harvested 30-50 days from sowing and planted out after all frosts have passed - best in a sunny warm position. We also sell many ornamental Amaranth in our annual seed section with stricking flower bracts or giant 6ft sized plants but they are not the true Callaloo of the Caribbean.

Atriplex hortensis - Orache

Atriplex hortensis or Orach is a bright red leafy annual grown much like spinach. It tolerates moderate frosts so a first April sowing in the UK is possible. Sow every three or four weeks to insure a continuous supply of young, tender leaves, easier to grow than spinach and a great annual for the edible flower bed with 6ft tall deep red to purple foliage.

Basella Malabar Spinach


Green & Red Malabar Spinach 20 seeds

Malabar Spinach is a perennial native of India but grown as an annual in the UK. If you are looking for a different flavour from traditional spinach and you have a glasshouse or polytunnel its well worth a try. Rubra or Red Malabar Spinach has deep green leaves veined in pink set against burgundy stems and violet blooms. Alba the Green Malabar Spinach has green leaves and green stems The edible leaves can be used throughout summer but do best in heat and humidity. The plant can climb to 10 feet or more but probably shorter in the UK and is grown up a trellis or wigwam of canes like climbing beans.

Chenopodium capitatum

Strawberry Spinach  Aprx 100 seeds
A member of the goosefoot family Chenopodium capitatum, a native of Europe, is known for the red fruits that form at maturity. These are pleasantly sweet, but insipid alongside a real berry. The real crop comes from the spinach-green, triangular, and bite-sized leaves with toothed margins, borne in an open rosette. A warm position, fast growing plant for summer salads and a beautiful curiosity in fruit.

Chenopodium giganteum

Chenopodium giganteum is a vigorous attractive and valuable annual for borders, with purple and lush green foliage. Young leaves can be cooked and eaten tasting of spinach or eaten raw. Excellent as a spot plant or centre piece. This is a tall plant to 6ft, giving a colourful display, with smooth stems striped red and green, producing large leaves of a brilliant magenta colour, covered when young with a red crystalline powder, and bearing long spikes of tiny reddish flowers.

Eryngium foetidum


Culantro, Mexican coriander or Thai parsley. Aprx 300 seeds

Eryngium foetidum known as Culantro or Mexican coriander or Thai parsley is widely used in seasoning and marinating in the Caribbean, in Peru's Amazon regions and extensively in Thailand, India, Vietnam, Laos, and other parts of Asia as a culinary herb. It dries well, retaining good colour and flavour, making it valuable in the dried herb industry. It is sometimes used as a substitute for cilantro (coriander in British English), but it has a much stronger taste.

Grows best in moist, shaded positions with good drainage. It can survive in poor soils, but it is best to feed frequently with high-nitrogen fertiliser to keep the leaves soft. Does not tolerate frost. Cut off the flower stalks frequently to ensure continuing production of new leaves. May be planted under glass in pots for the UK.

Ipomoea aquatica


Entsai or Water Convolvulus  aprox 50 seeds

A fast growing herb, with Bamboo like leaves that are long and thin. It thrives in moist soils typically in aquatic areas and a very popular Oriental vegetable cultivated for its leaves in China, Malaysia and India. The tender shoots are cut into segments and cooked, together with the leaves, in fish and meat stews, and in Southeast Asian dishes where the tender shoots along with the leaves are usually stir-fried with chili pepper, garlic and ginger or included in leafy salads. Easily grown as a fast growing tender annual in pots that are stood in a water tray in a warm position outdoors or under glass.

Minutina (Erba stella)

Minutina produces clumps of slender green leaves (like a jagged grass) with a mild nutty crunchy texture. It is commonly known as Erba stella in Italy resembling a narrow mizuna with a delicate rosette of slender green leaves. A useful winter greens plant that is winter hardy in an unheated glasshouse. Grows to about 25cm.

Moringa oleifera

Moringa oleifera is a native originally to the Himalayan foothills of northern India, the horseradish tree can be found widely planted throughout the tropical areas of the world. Nutritionally, ounce for ounce, powdered Moringa leaves have seven times the vitamin C of oranges, four times the calcium of milk, three times the potassium of bananas, four times the vitamin A of carrots and two times the protein of milk. The one to four foot long pods lend the plant the common name of drumstick tree. They are also high in nutritional value and can be cooked like green beans when young. The flowers are high in calcium and potassium but must be cooked before consuming. The peeled root tastes like horseradish, hence the common name, but care must be taken as the root bark is toxic. It is also used in many Indian traditional medicine recipes where they have over 300 uses for Moringa.

The Horseradish tree is fast growing, up to ten feet the first year, and matures at a height of thirty-five feet, but it will bloom the first year from seed. Tip pruning will encourage more leaf and fruit production and control its size and hence able to be pot grown. It has drooping branches with alternate, fern-like leaves, 9"-24" long, the 1" wide, white fragrant flowers are borne in loose clusters in the leaf axils. The pods are narrow, round, pointed growing to 18" long.

Nasturtium Blue Pepe

Nasturtium Blue Pepe is a unique variety that has been bred for culinary use, the edible small round leaves are uniquely coloured steel blue on top with purplish undersides with a peppery flavour. These are offset by the vivid dark red flowers that can also be used in salads, but the plant also makes a stunning decorative annual. Can be used as a baby leaf salad grown in seed trays in a glass house.

Perilla frustescens or Shi-So

Perilla frustescens, or sometimes called Shi-So, is a very popular herb in Japan and many other Asian countries. Young leaves and flowering shoots are used for cooking and pickling because of their aromatic flavour. This lovely red leafed form grows best under full sun or partial shading. A lovely plant which you can use to give herbal interest to your border or colour interest to your herb garden as they look a bit like coleus . The leaves have quite a strong aroma and flavour of cinnamon.

Wasabi Rocket is a variety of Rocket that will pack a punch with its distinctive taste of Wasabi. The leaves impart a real "wow factor" on the tongue. A must in Asian salads the leaves are tender and also stimulates digestion in rich dishes such as grilled meats. Even the flowers are edible and can be used with the leaves in salads, sushi, sandwiches or pasta. Delicious as a side dish or in a sandwich or with scrambled eggs. Water Cress (Nasturtium officinale)

You can grow watercress without running water, just sow the seeds directly in a shady place and keep moist. Alternatively watercress can be grown in pots placed in a large saucer of water. They produce a large crop high in calcium and iron with a delicous peppery flavour. Seeds can be sown from mid-May to September and can be harvested from June to October. Regular picking is essential for continuity.
